Welcome to this month’s issue of the Graphic Arts Wire. Each month you will receive helpful bindery tips and useful industry information from your friends at Graphic Crafts Inc.

Today’s Spotlight: Film Laminating

Film laminating is an eye-catching finishing process that provides beauty and strength to many printed products. Commonly laminated products include menus, book covers, signage, point-of-purchase displays, children’s books, self-mailers, annual reports, business collateral materials and much more.

This water resistant finishing technique is an excellent choice for projects that will see excessive wear and tear and be exposed to the elements. Film lamination is available in a variety of finishes including high gloss, satin and matte. Special films are available including lay-flat nylon and gluable varieties.  Numerous options make film laminating appropriate for many graphic arts projects.

Film lamination can be applied to almost any substrate, but watch out for those with heavy inks and coatings that can make adhesion difficult. Involve your finishing partner early to ensure your next film laminating job runs smoothly.

Attendance is Mandatory

In lean economic times or not, it’s always smart to eliminate non-essential expenses. Boondoggles? Cut ’em. But what about networking and training opportunities? How about the ones that come with a round of golf?

As long as the purpose of an industry event is either training or useful networking, appropriate conferences and trade shows should not be cut. Not only would you miss a cost effective way of meeting customers and prospects, you run the risk of being a “conspicuous absence.” Golf? Like it or not, a lot of business still is conducted in this relaxed environment, unless of course you’re manner-challenged on the links.

So don’t blow off the wine and cheese reception at this year’s trade show, it may be some of your best-invested time and money.

Membership does have its privileges.  Acquiring and maintaining active membership in industry related organizations can be an outstanding investment. Most organizations have networking events, continuing education opportunities and often resource sharing components. The Printing Industries of America and NAPL are great places to start.
